ISOLATION:
Isolation is a very significant theme in this novel. Most teenagers typically do not have cancer. However in this novel the three characters of Hazel, Augustus, and Isaac all suffer from it.Hazel has cancer in her lungs, Augustus has a cancer that is found in his bones, and Isaac has cancer in his eyes. All of them have friends of course; Hazel for example has her friend Kaitlyn, and Isaac, Monica, but when the going gets tough, it is their illnesses that separate them from their friends and close ones.People normally tend to not stay around others who have an illness because it makes them feel uncomfortable and sorry for them. They do not know how to respond or/ react towards the person and feel that it would just be simpler if they left those peoples lives. It results in the people such as Isaac, Hazel, and Augustus to feeling very lonely in life, as if there is no one else who knows what it feels like to be living with the limitations of cancer.Luckily, these three characters have each other to lean on and this helps each of them cope with the isolation that they all experience at some points or other throughout the novel.

LIFE, CONSCIOUSNESS, & EXISTENCE:
The heavy theme of life, consciousness, and existence is another important theme in the novel. Throughout the storyline one notices how Augustus and Hazel continually go over many philosophical ideas about who they are, what importance they have to the world, and what place they hold in the world. Each of them feels as if they need the answers to these questions because they both know that they only have a limited number of days left in their lives. They are dealing with all of these heavy topics at once because they are trying to absorb all of life’s lessons before it is too late for them. They are living life to the fullest before they are gone, in order to make something out of it that can define who they are when they die. This results in many of the courageous adventures that both Hazel and Augustus go through, throughout the novel.

DEATH & MORTALITY:
Probably one of the most important themes that is found in this novel is the theme of death and mortality. It is no shock to either Augustus or Hazel that one day they, (much sooner than they should, are going to die. This fact lingers with them throughout the entirety of this story.Sometimes it is prevalent and sometimes it is not but no matter what they do or how they feel, happy or sad, the idea about their eventual deaths is always there in the back of their minds. It is quiet a depressing theme in the novel, that two teenagers are going to eventually die, but never the less it adds a layer of gravity to the story, and without this theme the novel would not have been as emotionally packed as it is.

LOVE:
Another theme in The Fault in Our Stars is the theme of love. The reader gets to experience the kindling romance between Augustus and Hazel and watch it as it grows throughout the novel despite all of the hardships that take place.Augustus taught Hazel to love the life that she is living and that there is more to life than just having cancer.Hazel brought the light back into Augustus' life.Quite obviously they are in love, but they are not the only two that portray the theme of love. Everyone else in their lives do as well. There is love coming from all directions, from everyone in the story and that is what makes this novel such a heart warming one.

COURAGE:
Courage is demonstrated constantly throughout this novel and that is what makes it another significant theme. Not only do Hazel, Augustus, and Isaac show courage living everyday with the fear of cancer, visiting numerous doctors, getting various tests done and having the impending idea of death on their minds, but their loved ones also show courage as well. They portray courage by being strong and always there for these three characters. It is so easy to just chicken away from scary situations, such as raising children with cancer, but the loved ones in Augustus, Hazel, and Isaac’s lives have the courage to take on this responsibility. They are always there for each of these three characters and always remain strong in front of them, even when they actually are not. Therefore courage is a very pertinent theme in this novel.
