Peter Van Houten:
Peter Van Houten is a very significant character in this novel. He is the author of Hazel and Augustus' favourite novel, An Imperial Affliction. He is an alcoholic. When Hazel and Augustus meet Van Houten in Amsterdam, he is rude, incredibly insensitive, as well as drunk. He insults them about their sicknesses, and takes no interest in what Hazel and Augustus have to say to him. The reader later finds out that the reason he was so abrasive was because his daughter too had cancer and had died because of it.

Isaac:
Isaac is considered one of the less important, major characters in the novel. He along with Augustus and Hazel, also has cancer, and because of this loses his eyesight. When his girlfriend Monica finds out about this, she immediately dumps him.Isaac is devastated. He cared about Monica through sickness and all and wished that she cared the same for him as well.Isaac is a reminder throughout the novel that not only is cancer sad, but it can also be very confusing, maddening, as well as unfair. Also Isaac’s character is portrayed as being a great friend to both Augustus and Hazel through thick and thin. He stays by their side until the end and teaches the reader the epitome of friendship.
